Description
It may be difficlut to believe but this photo was taken at daylight but you need very specific lighting and positioning conditions to make it possible.
The “trick” was to have the macaw lit by direct sunlight from the opposite side but flying against the wall of the sinkhole which was in deep shade. The difference in light between the brightly lit macaw and the shady background was so huge that you had to underexpose severely or set manual exposure to get the correct exposure of the macaw, which rendered the sinkhole wall completely dark.
The photo was taken at the biggest sinkhole in South America, 100 meters deep and 500 meters in diameter, which hundreds of red-and-green macaws made their home. Hence its name “Buraco das Arraras” (Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil).
